چکیده

BACKGROUND Chorioamnionitis (CAM) is an important risk factor for the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effects of CAM on the development of BPD using interleukin 6 (IL-6), Krebs von den Lungen 6 (KL-6), and transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) in the amniotic fluid as markers for inflammation, lung injury, and fibrosis/remodeling, respectively. METHODS Amniotic fluid concentrations of IL-6, KL-6, and TGF-β1 were measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or electro-chemiluminescence immunoassay. RESULTS Of the 36 preterm infants, 18 were exposed to histologically confirmed CAM. Of these, 12 were later diagnosed as having BPD. The IL-6, KL-6, and TGF-β1 levels in the amniotic fluid significantly increased with increasing histologic severity of CAM. Moreover, these markers were higher in the BPD group with histologic CAM than those without. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that CAM is likely to induce inflammatory, injury, and remodeling processes in the fetal lung.

Melatonin Supplementation as Adjuvant Therapy for the Prevention of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia in Neonates

Background: Neonatal bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a chronic chest disease caused by prolonged ventilation and oxygenation which leads to neonatal disability. Methods: It was a prospective randomized clinical trial (RCT) (Study ID: TCTR20191211004) which was conducted in Tanta University Hospital (TUH) from July 2016 to March 2018 on 100 preterm neonates who exhibited severe respirat...

Neutrophil-Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin 2, Krebs Von den Lungen-6, Beta 2 Microglobulin, and Adiponectin: Crosstalk in Early Prediction of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia in Egyptian Preterm

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a respiratory distress syndrome caused by chronic lung parenchymal injury, occurring primarily in preterm infants. Therefore, research for early biomarkers for BPD is really important. This study was conducted to evaluate levels of Krebs Von den Lungen-6 (KL-6) and adiponectin in cord blood, neutrophil-gelatinase-associated lipocalin 2 (NGAL2) mRNA gene expre...

Aberrant effect of genistein on placenta development expressed through alteration in transforming growth factor-β1 and alkaline phosphatase across the maternal serum, the placenta and the amniotic fluid

Objective(s): The mechanism via which genistein, the major isoflavone content of soya, adversely influenced placenta and fetal development was evaluated in pregnant laboratory rats.Materials and Methods: There were control, 2 mg/kg and 4 mg/kg genistein groups of rats with five sub-groups based on gestation termination day. At the end of...

Decreased Expression of Transforming Growth Factor-beta1 in Bronchoalveolar Lavage Cells of Preterm Infants with Maternal Chorioamnionitis

Maternal chorioamnionitis has been associated with abnormal lung development. We examined the effect of maternal chorioamnionitis on the expression of transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) in the lungs of preterm infants. A total of 63 preterm (<or=34 weeks) infants who were intubated in the delivery room were prospectively enrolled. Their placentas were examined for the presence of chor...

Antenatal inflammation induced TGF-beta1 but suppressed CTGF in preterm lungs.

Chorioamnionitis is frequently associated with preterm birth and increases the risk of adverse outcomes such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1 is a key regulator of lung development, airway remodeling, lung fibrosis, and regulation of inflammation, and all these processes contribute to the development of BPD. Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) is a ...
